Feature: product recommendations
AI product recommendations for Shopify that start with a question
Tycoon recommends the way a good store associate does. It asks one short question when the need is unclear, then suggests one to three products from your catalog, each with a reason, at the live price.
What are AI product recommendations on Shopify?
AI product recommendations on Shopify are product suggestions chosen by software from your catalog for a specific shopper. Widget apps place rows such as "you may also like" on product and cart pages. A conversational recommender like Tycoon asks what the shopper needs and answers in a chat, with a reason for each suggestion.
Both approaches have a place. A recommendation row works without the shopper doing anything. A conversation helps when the shopper is stuck between options and needs a deciding detail: the right size, the right shade, the right material. This is often called guided selling, and our guide to guided selling on Shopify covers it in depth.
How does Tycoon decide what to recommend?
Tycoon starts from what the shopper said. If the need is clear, it recommends right away. If not, it asks one short question built from your own catalog, then suggests one to three products, each with a reason tied to the answer. It skips the question when the shopper has already given the deciding detail.
On install, Tycoon reads your catalog by itself: products, variants, images and collections, plus size charts, your FAQ and your brand voice. That is where the questions come from. A store that sells shoes in widths gets a width question; a store that sells skincare gets a skin type question. Nothing has to be uploaded or typed.
| Store type | What it asks first |
|---|---|
| Beauty | Skin type, shade, finish; see beauty stores |
| Fashion | Size, fit, fabric; see apparel stores |
| Footwear | Size, width, activity; see footwear stores |
| Jewelry | Metal, occasion, ring size; see jewelry stores |
| Home | Room, dimensions, material; see home and decor stores |
| Electronics | Use, connection, compatibility |
What does the shopper actually see?
The shopper sees product cards inside the chat with real images from your store, the live price and the right variant already selected. Each card has a short reason it was suggested. Add to cart puts the product in your store's real cart, so the theme's cart count updates, and a checkout button sits in the chat.
The cart only changes when the shopper taps the button. Tycoon never adds items on its own. Price, compare-at price and stock are read live for every answer and checked before the reply is sent, so a card is built to show only the figures your store shows.
How is this different from a Shopify product recommendation app?
Most Shopify product recommendation apps show rows of related or frequently bought together products, based on rules or purchase history. Tycoon works in conversation: it reacts to what one shopper says, asks for the missing detail, and explains each pick. Many stores run both, since they serve different moments.
| Recommendation widget | Tycoon in chat | |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Page context or purchase history | What the shopper says, plus one question if needed |
| Output | A row of products | One to three products, each with a reason |
| Shopper effort | None | A short exchange |
| Price and stock | Depends on the app | Read live and checked before every reply |
Does it get better at recommending over time?
Yes, on the Tycoon plan, and only within your store. Every night it looks at what worked, such as recommendations that led to a purchase and questions that helped shoppers decide, and tunes which product to recommend first and which question to ask first. A weekly "What I learned" feed shows every change, and you can undo it.
Learning uses only your store's data and is never shared with other stores. You can undo any change or turn learning off. See how Tycoon learns your store for the details.
What will it not do when recommending?
Tycoon does not invent ingredients, certifications or policies, and it does not give medical, legal, financial or safety advice. It does not use false urgency, fake scarcity or fake social proof. For supplements, it shows what the label says and refers health questions to a professional. It never pretends to be human.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tycoon recommend products that are out of stock?
Stock is read live from your store for every answer, and each reply is checked against that data before it is sent, so a card reflects what your store shows at that moment.
How many products does it suggest at once?
One to three, each with a reason. Keeping the list short is meant to help the shopper decide rather than browse another grid.
Do I need to tag products or write rules?
No. Tycoon reads your catalog, variants, collections, size charts and FAQ on install. You review and approve the shop facts it found before going live.
Can it recommend in other languages?
Yes. It answers each shopper in the language they write in, across 16 languages on every plan. See languages.
How many products can it know on the Free plan?
Up to 25 products. Starter and higher plans cover the whole catalog. See pricing.
