How to reduce WISMO tickets on Shopify

Many "where is my order" messages are not about lost parcels. They are about silence. Here is how to answer the question before it is asked, and how to answer it fast when it still is.

What is a WISMO ticket, and why do Shopify stores get so many?

A WISMO ticket is any "where is my order?" contact: an email, chat or DM asking whether an order shipped, where it is now, or when it will arrive. Stores often get many because customers hear nothing between checkout and delivery, and asking a person feels quicker than hunting for a tracking link.

The word comes from the acronym, and our glossary entry on WISMO covers the family of questions it includes: "has it shipped?", "the tracking hasn't moved", "it says delivered but I don't have it", and "can I still change the address?". Only the last two usually need a person. The rest are information gaps.

That distinction drives the whole playbook. If a question can be answered from data you already have (fulfillment status, tracking events, your shipping policy), the fix is to put that data in front of the customer earlier and in more places. If a question needs judgment, such as a claim for a missing parcel, the fix is a faster route to your team, not more automation.

Where do Shopify customers check their order status?

Shopify customers check order status on the order status page, the last page of checkout, which they can reopen from the order confirmation. According to Shopify's help center, it shows shipment status once you add tracking numbers, and real-time location updates for shipments with a supported carrier, so customers can check without contacting you.

Per Shopify's order status page documentation, customers can also sign in to their customer account to track orders, while customers without an account may need to verify their email or phone number plus the order number after some time has passed. The page can be customized in the checkout and accounts editor.

Shopify's built-in order tracking overview adds that merchants can put custom messages and brand elements on the order status page and edit notification templates to include a link to it. In practice, three things make the page do its job:

  • A tracking number on every fulfillment. Without one, the page has nothing to show and the customer has nothing to click.
  • A short, specific message on the page itself. For example: "Orders leave our studio within 2 business days. Tracking can take a day to show its first scan." Use your real handling time, not a hopeful one.
  • A link to your shipping policy and a contact route, so a customer who still has a question can ask it once, with the order number attached.

Which Shopify shipping notifications should you turn on?

Turn on every shipping notification your carriers support: order confirmation, shipping confirmation with the tracking link, shipping updates, out for delivery and delivered. Each message answers a WISMO question before the customer asks it. Review the templates in your Shopify admin so each one links back to the order status page.

Shopify's changelog notes that the "Shipment out for delivery" and "Shipment delivered" emails can be turned off in the admin, which also means they can be turned off by accident. Check they are on. Whether they fire also depends on the carrier sending delivery events, so test with a real order on each carrier you use.

Customer email notifications cover orders, shipping and account events and can carry your logo and colors, per Shopify's notifications documentation. Use that branding so customers recognize the email and do not mistake it for spam, which is its own source of "I never got anything" tickets.

How do you stop WISMO tickets when a shipment is delayed?

Email customers before they notice the delay. When a carrier stalls, a holiday hits or a product ships late, send a short, honest update with a new expected window and a link to the order status page. A customer who hears from you first has less reason to write in than one who hears nothing.

Proactive messages work because they replace the customer's uncertainty with a date. The writing matters as much as the timing:

  • Lead with the status, then the reason. "Your order is on its way but running late. The carrier has a backlog in your region."
  • Give a window you can stand behind, taken from the carrier or your own records, never a guess written to sound reassuring.
  • Say what you are doing (watching the shipment, opening a trace after a set number of days) and when they will hear from you next.
  • Make replying easy. A reply to the email should reach a person who can see the order.

How do you know which orders are stuck?

Review fulfilled orders whose tracking has not changed for longer than your normal transit time, and orders still unfulfilled past your stated handling time. Many stores do this with a daily saved view in the admin or an automation tool. The point is to find the quiet orders before their owners start emailing.

Can an order tracking chatbot answer "where is my order" safely?

Yes, if it reads the real order record instead of guessing, only shows an order to the customer who placed it, and hands off to a person when the answer is a problem rather than a status. A chatbot that invents a delivery date or reveals someone else's order creates more tickets than it saves.

The safe pattern looks like this. The shopper is signed in to the store's customer account, so the store already knows which orders are theirs. The shopper asks about an order. The assistant reads that order's status and tracking from Shopify at that moment and repeats only what the record says. It never estimates a date the carrier has not given.

Anonymous visitors are different. Asking a stranger to type an order number and email into a chat window, and then reading back order details, is a privacy risk. A safer answer for a guest is a link to the order status page and the shipping policy, which already have their own verification steps.

Read more about why chatbots invent facts and how grounding prevents it. The same discipline that keeps a bot from inventing a price keeps it from inventing a delivery date.

What should your shipping and returns policy say to prevent tickets?

Your shipping policy should state handling time, carriers, delivery windows by region, what happens when tracking stalls, and how to report a missing or damaged parcel. Clear policy turns many "where is my order" questions into self-service, and gives your team and any assistant one source of truth to quote.

Write it for the customer who is already worried. A few practical rules:

  1. Separate handling time (before the parcel leaves you) from transit time (after the carrier has it). Many early WISMO tickets come from customers who assume they are the same.
  2. State delivery windows as ranges per region, and say plainly that carrier estimates can move.
  3. Explain what "delivered" means when nothing is at the door: check with neighbors and the building, then contact you after a stated period.
  4. Give one contact route for problems, and say what to include (order number, a photo for damage).
  5. Link the policy from the order confirmation, the order status page and the footer, so it is never more than one click away.

When should a WISMO question go to a person?

Send it to a person when the answer requires a decision: a parcel marked delivered that never arrived, damage, a wrong address, a customs hold, a reshipment or a refund. Also hand off when the customer is upset, whatever the facts. Automation answers status questions; people resolve problems.

A clean human hand-off has three parts. First, the customer is told plainly that a person will take over and roughly when. Second, the person receives the context (the order, what was already said) so the customer does not repeat themselves. Third, the automated side stops making promises once the hand-off happens.

Track two numbers to see whether the playbook works: how many contacts per hundred orders are WISMO, and your first response time on the ones that reach a person. If the first falls and the second holds steady or improves, you are removing the easy questions without neglecting the hard ones.

How does Tycoon approach order questions?

Tycoon is built to answer everyday questions around the clock, including where's my order, shipping times and the returns policy when asked, and to hand off to the merchant's team when a person is needed. It states only shop facts the merchant approved, such as delivery times and shipping thresholds.

For order status, Tycoon works only with a shopper who is signed in to the store's customer account, shows only that shopper's own orders from the last 60 days, and only when they ask. Nothing about the order is stored. This is available on the Starter plan and up; see pricing for what each plan includes.

It also says plainly that it is an AI and always offers a person from the merchant's team. You can see how the support side fits together on the support automation page, or book a demo on your own store to watch it answer your real shipping questions.

Frequently asked questions

What does WISMO stand for?

WISMO stands for "where is my order?". It covers every customer contact about an order's shipping status, tracking, delivery date or a missing parcel.

Does Shopify have built-in order tracking?

Yes. Shopify's order status page shows shipment status once a tracking number is added, with real-time updates for supported carriers, and Shopify sends shipping notifications by email. Third-party tracking apps add more customization.

Why does my customer's tracking say nothing yet?

Usually the label was created but the carrier has not scanned the parcel. Say in your shipping policy and on the order status page that the first scan can take a day or more after the label is created.

Is it safe to let a chatbot look up orders?

It can be, if the shopper is signed in so the store knows which orders are theirs, the bot reads the live order record rather than guessing, and anything beyond status goes to a person.

Which WISMO cases should never be automated?

Lost or damaged parcels, "delivered but not received", address changes after shipping, refunds and reshipments, and any upset customer. These need a person who can make a decision.
