Tycoon vs Shopify Inbox: free native chat or a dedicated AI associate
Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own free chat app, and it now includes an opt-in AI Inbox agent. Tycoon is an independent AI sales associate for Shopify stores, in early access. This page sets out what each states publicly so you can decide whether the free option already covers your needs or you need a Shopify Inbox alternative.
What is Shopify Inbox?
Shopify Inbox is a free chat app made by Shopify. Its App Store listing now describes it as an AI-powered sales associate for your storefront: buyers ask questions and get help finding products from your catalog, and you can run Inbox with or without the AI agent, so your staff can keep handling chats themselves.
Shopify's help center says the Inbox agent answers questions about products, shipping, returns, sizing and store policies, using your product catalog, store policies, Knowledge Base facts and files, and published storefront content (Shopify Help Center). When shoppers sign in with Shop, it can personalize recommendations from their preferences, sizes and purchase history.
Its strengths are price and fit: it is free, built by Shopify, connects to your catalog and policies automatically, and its App Store listing names 21 languages. For many stores, Inbox is the natural first chat tool, and the right one to try before paying for anything.
What is Tycoon?
Tycoon is an independent AI sales associate for Shopify stores, currently in early access and not affiliated with Shopify. It reads your catalog, policies, shipping and brand voice on install, you approve the facts it found, and it then guides shoppers to products, answers everyday questions and hands off to your team.
Its design choices are about accuracy and restraint. Price, compare-at price and stock are read live for every answer, every draft is checked whole before it is sent, and it makes at most one offer per reply. The how it works page walks through install, learning, approval and going live.
How do Tycoon and Shopify Inbox compare feature by feature?
The table compares what each product states publicly. Both now describe themselves as AI sales associates for the storefront, so the differences are in details: checks before sending, cart actions, offer rules, languages and measurement. Where Shopify's public pages do not address a point, the cell says so.

Is Shopify Inbox really free, and what does Tycoon cost?
Yes. On October 20, 2026, the Shopify App Store listing showed Shopify Inbox as free, and Shopify's help center says it is available for stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced or Shopify Plus plan. Tycoon also has a free plan; its paid plans start at $39 per month.
Tycoon's Free plan covers 100 conversations a month and up to 25 products, with Tycoon branding on the bubble. Starter ($39 per month) covers the whole catalog, 500 conversations and order tracking. Growth ($99) adds bundles, whole-cart cross-sell and one 30-day lift test. Every plan bills through Shopify with no overage fees. See Tycoon pricing.
When is Shopify Inbox the better fit?
Shopify Inbox is the better fit when you want chat at no cost from the platform you already use, or when your team prefers to answer shoppers personally with an AI agent as an option. It is also a sensible first step for a new store that wants to learn what shoppers ask before paying.
- You want a free chat tool made by Shopify, with no extra vendor.
- Many of your shoppers sign in with Shop, so personalized recommendations from purchase history are useful.
- Your team wants to reply by hand with product links, discount codes and images.
When does Tycoon fit?
Tycoon fits when you want the assistant to sell actively while proving its figures: live price and stock on every answer, a block on any mismatched number, add to cart from the chat and one offer at most. It also suits owners who want revenue measured with a holdout rather than assisted-order counts.
- Product cards with real images, the live price and the right variant selected, plus add to cart and checkout in the chat. See the Shopify AI chatbot that sells.
- Offer rules: a matching add-on, a bundle or the free-shipping nudge, never more than one per reply. See upsell and cross-sell.
- Right-to-left layouts for Arabic, Urdu and Hebrew. See languages.
- Nightly learning from your own store, with new answers live only after you approve them (Tycoon plan). See learning.
Can you use Shopify Inbox and Tycoon together?
You can install both, but two chat bubbles on one storefront split shoppers' attention. If you try Tycoon, a cleaner test is to switch Inbox off on the storefront for the trial period and compare the same measure before and during, or use Tycoon's holdout (a 30-day lift test on Growth), which keeps a random share of visitors without it.
Our guide to measuring AI chatbot revenue with a holdout test explains why simple before-and-after comparisons can mislead, and Shopify AI chatbot vs AI sales associate covers the difference between answering and selling.
